Ferris State University Masters of Nursing Outcome: Specialty Leadership Role Practice Demonstrate an ability to navigate and integrate care services across the health care system. National League of Nursing Core Competencies for Nurse Educators Competency II: Facilitate learner development and socialization Competency VIII: Function within the educational environment A nurse educator must navigate and integrate education services across a continuum similar to the health care systems. Further evaluation of Core Competency II reveals “Nurse educators recognize the value of professional socialization and... create interpersonal relationships and learning environments that assist in the development of a competent professional nurse” (NLN, 2012. p. 52). The first semester is the ideal time to introduce and encourage integration of professional behaviors and learning strategies. The community college in which I completed my practicum has a very diverse student population: immersion into this diversity assisted me in comprehending the different challenges experienced by students from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and to create or access resources to meet the needs of the individual student. Under the NLN competency of Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization (NLN, 2012. p. 16) I focused on “identifies individual learning styles and unique learning needs of diverse learners” (NLN, 2012. p. 16). To meet this objective, I met with students experiencing difficulty within the course. In order to “provide resources to diverse learners” (NLN, 2012. p. 16) I explored learner support systems in place within the college, explored experiences of educators within the program in assisting students, and created educational opportunities that supported multiple styles of learning including on line learning opportunities, case studies, and supplemental supportive material. I worked within the educational environment, within the program as well as the college as a whole, to reach my students on a variety of levels. Thus, the NLN competency VII: Function within the educational environment is tied into the outcome of the Specialty Leadership Role Practice. One of my primary educational passions is health literacy. I seem to find a way to introduce it into almost every educational setting. I created the Literate Care Model as a means of addressing the needs of the literately challenged individuals in a literacy heavy environment. A patient who is unable to comprehend the multiplicity of written words surrounding her in the health care environment is a patient at risk for poor outcomes. The Literate Care Model addresses this individual who may easily fall through the cracks in the health care system. I have had many opportunities to present my literacy education to multiple nursing student cohorts as well interdisciplinary teams. Below are a few examples of my work in health literacy education.
