Ferris State University Masters of Nursing Outcome: Professionalism Advance the culture of excellence through lifelong learning and the design of innovative nursing practices National League of Nursing Core Competencies for Nurse Educators Competency I: Facilitate learning Competency II: Facilitate leaner development and socialization Competency III: Use assessment and evaluation strategies Competency IV: Participate in curriculum design and evaluation of program outcomes Competency V: Function and a change agent and leader Competency VI: Pursue continuous quality improvement in the nurse educator role Competency VII: Engage in scholarship Competency VIII: Function within the educational environment What better way to advance the culture of excellence than to continuously pursue quality improvement in the nurse educator role via continuous engagement in scholarship. Competency VI delineates the need for the nurse educator to continue to develop the educator role, and to realize that professional education activities change as experience is gained. In other words, the quality improvement I seek will evolve as my experience increases. Prior to my Masters practicum I had experience in simulation and clinical education. Therefore, I recognized that I needed to expand my experience into the didactic role. I immersed in the didactic role, embracing a specialty beyond my comfort zone. in this process I created education opportunities for the students based upon their learning objectives, facilitated learning through learner centered teaching opportunities (competency I), facilitated learner development and socialization through assistance of at-risk students (competency II), and used assessment and evaluation techniques from NCLEX style questions to quiz games (competency III). During my practicum I had the opportunity to sit in on curriculum meetings and contribute to critical decision making (competency IV). As part of my education, I designed an integrated approach to including electronic health records in the nursing curriculum. I functioned as a change agent through introduction of learner centered opportunities, which I further passed on to Ferris State University School of Nursing staff (competency V). Through reflection and mentorship by my preceptor, I pursued continuous improvement in the nurse educator role (competency VI). Please see reflection journal below. The engagement in scholarship has been continuous, and will continue as I enter a new role. I am interested in research into how simulation laboratory experiences increase or otherwise affect student comprehension, comfort levels, confidence levels, test scores, and general understanding of the nursing role. I have presented evidenced based practice to the faculty and the in-coming laboratory coordinator in an effort to achieve a level of consistency, create consistent pre- and post-testing for use in research into effectiveness of simulated learning experiences, and increase student learning opportunities (competency VII). My dual role as clinical coordinator and Masters student has required me to function within two separate educational environments, learning the extensiveness of both as well as the intricacies. To assist students at-risk, I needed to learn what college-wide opportunities were available, how at-risk students were supported, and what resources are available to the students and faculty. With implementation of a few of the academic works I have completed has come the opportunity to interact with multiple disciplines within Ferris State University, allowing me to function within the larger education environment (competency VIII). In order to highlight the growth gained through the Masters practicum, I have attached my final synthesis of the experience. Reference: Ferris State University School of Nursing. (2015).
