Ferris State University Masters of Nursing Outcome: Collaborative Leadership Function as a member or leader of collaborative interprofessional care teams. National League of Nursing Core Competencies for Nurse Educators Competency III: Use assessment and evaluation strategies Competency V: Function and a change agent and leader Competency VIII: Function within the educational environment As a nurse educator my primary focus is nursing students. However, it is imperative that nursing students learn to work within an interdisciplinary team. To function as a leader or member of a collaborative interprofessional team, the nurse educator must use multiple competencies. First and foremost is Competency V: Function as a change agent and leader. To lead students into the interdisciplinary framework, I introduced multiple team roles in simulation, lecture, and in test questions. The students were expected to be able to interact with an interdisciplinary team as well as predict what communication other team members would need in order to assist a patient to achieve his or her goals. When would the student contact the pediatrician? What other team member would you call in to assist with an infant in respiratory distress? Who could assist you with a non-English speaking patient or family member? How and when would you involve clergy? To further this end, I created the Inter-professional Partnership Model of Care. This concept map shows how interprofessional education can lead to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction. . By creating interdisciplinary education opportunities, the university can assist students to create new collaborations and communication patterns, learn with and from fellow students from other disciplines, and more adequately prepare all students for the professional world. This ideology is a direct reflection of the NLN competency VII, functioning within the educational environment. The advantages and challenges of interprofessional education are explored in the Model of Care, which you can access below. To evaluate the success of interdisciplinary learning, the nurse educator must implement Core Competency III: use assessment and evaluation strategies. I have had the opportunity to evaluate/assess levels of learning with assignments within the didactic setting. The creation of a variety of learner center teaching opportunities creates the need to evaluate the effectiveness of the opportunities as well as the level of learning achieved by the students. These opportunities include evaluation of the case studies and concept maps, assessment of student knowledge during questioning games, and assessment of cultural and experiential bias through student sharing of experiences. I have studied and practiced writing NCLEX style questions and have had my questions included in a test question bank. Examples of a few of my NCLEX style questions as available below.
